TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR Parkinson´s disease (PD)
STALEVO is indicated for
certain patients with Parkinson's disease experiencing symptom
reemergence due to levodopa "wearing-off."
|
|
|
When a patient is treated with carbidopa/levodopa, symptoms may reemerge before the next scheduled dose. This is called symptom reemergence due to "wearing-off."
As your PD progresses, your treatment may be modified. Your health care professional (HCP) may prescribe different medications to help you manage your symptoms. If you experience symptom reemergence due to "wearing-off" while on carbidopa/levodopa, STALEVO may be the right medication to manage your symptoms.
Just as there are different symptoms of PD, your HCP has different medications to treat them, including:
|
| |
| |
|
Carbidopa/levodopa: Carbidopa is added to levodopa to inhibit the action of dopa decarboxylase, an enzyme in the body that breaks down levodopa before it reaches the brain. Levodopa is converted by the body into dopamine, which replaces, or supplements, the dopamine no longer produced by the brain
Carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone: (a catechol-O-methyltransferase [COMT] inhibitor in combination with carbidopa/levodopa): STALEVO is a combination of carbidopa, levodopa, and entacapone. Carbidopa is added to levodopa to inhibit the action of dopa decarboxylase. Dopa decarboxylase is an enzyme in the body that breaks down levodopa before it reaches the brain. Levodopa is converted by the body into dopamine, which replaces, or supplements, the dopamine no longer produced by the brain. Entacapone, a COMT inhibitor is added to further inhibit the breakdown of dopamine in the body before it reaches the brain
Dopamine receptor agonists: Drugs that mimic the activity of dopamine in the brain
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors Type B (MAO-B): Drugs that inhibit the activity of MAO-B, one of 2 subtypes of MAO, to further slow the breakdown of dopamine in the body
