UNDERSTANDING STALEVO therapy

For patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experiencing symptom reemergence due to levodopa "wearing-off." STALEVO does more than carbidopa/levodopa alone

In fact, STALEVO extends the benefits of carbidopa/levodopa. STALEVO is the most recent advance in levodopa therapy. It contains:

  • Carbidopa, which inhibits the action of dopa decarboxylase, an enzyme in the body that breaks down levodopa, making more dopamine available to receptors in the brain
  • Levodopa, which is converted by the body into dopamine to replace, or supplement, the dopamine no longer produced by the brain, is the most widely prescribed treatment for Parkinson's disease
  • Entacapone, which is added to inhibit the action of COMT, another enzyme in the body that breaks down levodopa, to further inhibit the breakdown of levodopa in the body before it reaches the brain

Because STALEVO contains entacapone, it provides a more persistent presence of levodopa in the body, leading to more consistent symptom control than carbidopa/levodopa alone.

How STALEVO works

Parkinson's disease is caused by a shortage of dopamine. Levodopa turns into dopamine when it enters the brain. When your loved one takes carbidopa/levodopa, only a small amount of the drug can exert its effect because the body has multiple mechanisms to break it down quickly before it has a chance to enter the brain. STALEVO blocks 2 mechanisms that break down levodopa, allowing more of it to reach the brain, enhancing and optimizing the effects of levodopa.

For patients with PD experiencing symptom reemergence due to levodopa "wearing-off." STALEVO may deliver smoother and steadier levels of levodopa to the brain in an extended, more consistent manner. Clinical studies prove that when carbidopa, levodopa, and entacapone (the 3 components in STALEVO) are combined, patients have better control of symptoms for longer periods of time—an average of almost an additional hour and a half each day (1.4 hours).

What it does

STALEVO is clinically proven to improve functionality and has been shown to deliver more active time during the day—an average of almost an hour and a half each day (1.4 hours). So the person you care for can enjoy more time with fewer symptoms.

Talk to your loved one's HCP if you have questions about STALEVO.

The person you care for can use STALEVO instead of carbidopa/levodopa and COMTAN® (entacapone) 200 mg tablets, if he or she has been taking those medicines as separate tablets.

For patients with PD experiencing symptom reemergence due to levodopa "wearing-off," STALEVO can be used to replace carbidopa/levodopa.
